Chess Club

Roanoke City Schools has been offering formal chess instruction for the division's students for over 30 years. Research has shown that involvement in chess builds self-esteem, critical thinking, logical reasoning skill, and memory skills, as well as observational and analytical skills for all children.

The root of the school system's program is the school chess club. Each school in Roanoke City can offer either a before or after-school chess club. During this time, students receive basic chess instruction from the sponsor with guidance from one of the division's quadrant instructors and division-approved lesson plans.

All tournaments are held at Fallon Park Elementary School Unless Otherwise Noted.

From the North: Take Exit 6 off 1‐581. Turn left at the light and proceed through the next 3 traffic lights. After the 3rd light take the second left onto19th Street. Fallon Park is on top of the hill on the right.

From the South: Take Exit 6 off 1‐581. Turn right at the light and proceed through the next 2 traffic lights. After the 2nd light take the second left onto 19th Street. Fallon Park is on top of the hill on the right.
