Security Screenings
RCPS has purchased artificial intelligence (A.I.) units to use for random security screenings or when deemed necessary by school administration. These units screen for items that could be harmful for students, such as weapons or other items that should not be brought into a school, such as toy weapons. With these security screenings, students do not have to remove coats, or screen backpacks separately. Again, these will be used on a random basis or when school administration deems necessary.
FAQs
-
When will these devices be used?
RCPS will use the artificial intelligence units for random security screenings and on an as-needed basis, such as during large events or when there is a threat.
-
How does the technology work?
The units are hands-free systems that use sensors and artificial intelligence to screen for items that could be harmful for students, such as weapons or other items that should not be brought into a school, such as toy weapons. It can screen up to 3,600 people per hour — 10 times faster than traditional metal detectors. The system is more sophisticated than a traditional metal detector and less invasive, as students do not have to remove coats or screen backpacks separately. It does not collect or store any personally identifiable information.
-
Who will operate the units?
School security officers and school resource officers will operate the devices when they are in use.
