CTE Extravaganza Supports Student Scholarships, Enhanced Programming

Career & Technical Education (CTE) provides students enrolled in Roanoke City Public Schools the opportunity to gain employability skills, technical knowledge, and the training they need to succeed in the workforce — today and in the future. RCPS actively partners with local businesses and industries to design and provide high-quality, dynamic programs to meet the current, emerging, and projected labor market needs of our region.

With your help, the Roanoke Career and Technical Education Foundation will be able to continue to support students enrolled in RCPS’ CTE programming through scholarship awards and enhanced programming. Donate today or bid in the silent auction.

Currently, more than 6,000 students are enrolled in CTE classes. This year, we have doubled our seat capacity with the opening of the new Charles W. Day Technical Education Center adjacent to William Fleming High School. This is in addition to the existing Roanoke Technical Education Center at Gibboney Hall adjacent to Patrick Henry High School. This expansion is allowing us to meet increased demand from businesses and industries and provide new classes in addition to our existing programs.

Your investment in CTE programming impacts students, families, and our community. Students enrolled in CTE:

  • are more likely to attend school regularly if there are CTE and Fine Arts courses that interest them;
  • are more engaged and less likely to drop out of school;
  • who take multiple courses in one CTE program are, on average, more likely to graduate on time;
  • graduate with a diploma AND a resume rich in skills and experiences that will benefit them on their college and career paths;
  • are more likely than students who do not participate in CTE to enroll in post-secondary education and are just as likely to earn a degree or certificate;
  • are more likely than students who do not participate in CTE to be employed full time and have higher median annual earnings eight years after graduation;
  • understand how their educational experiences and learning applies to the needs of employers.

The graduation rate for students who complete a two-year CTE program in Roanoke City Public Schools is 100%!
