A Message from Roanoke City Public Schools — Monday, November 4, 2024
In Roanoke City Public Schools, we believe in real-world learning experiences, and Election Day is a wonderful way for our students to learn about voting, elected officials, and the democratic process. We also know that our students, families, staff, and entire community may be feeling a range of emotions during this election cycle. Ahead of the election, we want to reaffirm our commitment to respect, dialogue, empathy, and kindness.
There is no place in RCPS for disrespect, hate, discrimination, or name-calling. We respect and protect all of our students by creating positive and welcoming learning environments. We encourage our families and community to join us in promoting respectful conversations and modeling appropriate behavior.
Students who feel safe, respected, and included in their classrooms are more likely to succeed academically. When there is a feeling of uncertainty or divisiveness, it is even more important for our schools to foster a sense of belonging.
Our Resources for Families webpage includes informational resources for when the news causes uncertainty and how to have difficult conversations with children, among other helpful links. As a reminder, our counselors are available to talk with students, and through our partnership with Hazel Health, students may also meet with a licensed therapist virtually at no cost.
We are all neighbors, and we all want the best for our students. Let’s continue to show how We Are One. Together, we can work to support our students so they can dream, excel, and meet their full potential.
